Single Serving Narration - Fight Club

You wake up at O’Hare.

You wake up at SeaTac.

Pacific, Mountain, Central. Lose an hour, gain an hour. This is your life, and it’s ending one minute at time.

You wake up at Air Harbor International.

If you wake up at a different time and in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?

Everywhere I travel – tiny life. Single-serving sugar, single-serving cream, single pat of butter.

Microwave Cordon Bleu hobby kit.

Shampoo/conditioner combo. Single-serving mouthwash, tiny bar of soap.

The people I meet on each flight –they’re single-serving friends.

Between take-off and landing, we have our time together, but that’s all we get.

You wake up at Logan.

On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

I’m a recall coordinator. My job is to apply the formula. It’s a story problem.

A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 miles per hour. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now: do we initiate a recall?

Take the number of vehicles in the field, (A), and multiply it by the probable rate of failure, (B), then multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement, (C).

A times B times C equals X…

If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don’t do one.

“Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?”

Oh, you wouldn’t believe.

“… Which… car company do you work for?”

A major one.

Don't be a dummy, Pay for Parking.

I’ve been towed twice over the past two years. I’m writing this down because I want to convince myself fully to just pay for the cheap cost. Using I my handy dandy finance knowledge it comes in handy to quantify using time-value-of-money calculations.

Option 1: Pay For Parking

  • Payment = $125 per year (25 parking per year * 5)
  • Interest = 3.5%
  • Number of years = 2 years
  • Future Value (what I would pay at the end) = 0
  • Present Value (what I pay now) = ?

Option 2: Be A Dummy And Get Towed

  • Payment = $160 per year
  • Interest = 3.5%
  • Number of years = 2 years
  • Future Value (what I would pay at the end) = 0
  • Present Value (What I pay now) = ?

What should you do?

  • Opportunity Cost Option 1 =-$237.46 (This is better)
  • Opportunity Cost Option 2 = -$303.95 (This is bad)

Don’t be a dummy, Pay for Parking.

Virginia Non-Profit Setup Guide

Making corporations and nonprofits are extremely easy in Virginia. Here’s a quick step by step guide. (P.S. I am not a lawyer or CPA)

1. Apply for a corporation’s EIN (Free)

https://sa.www4.irs.gov/applyein/

2. File for a nonstock corporation ($75+$25 yearly)

https://www.scc.virginia.gov/businesses/new-business-resources/

Be mindful, there is an annual renewal fee of $25 for Nonstock Corporations

3.File for Form 1023-EZ for nonprofit exemption under 501(c)(3) ($275)

Form 1023-EZ is filed online: https://www.pay.gov/public/login

Make sure you check the Eligibility Worksheet: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1023ez.pdf

In General: To be able to file 1023-EZ the organization has to have less than $50k for any operating year and less than $250k in total assets. Please check the full worksheet. Otherwise you need to file the full form 1023.

4.Get mail approval (4-6 week wait)

Yay! You now have a nonprofit!

5.File yearly tax returns

https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/annual-electronic-filing-requirement-for-small-exempt-organizations-form-990-n-e-postcard

If under $50k in gross income, you only need to send Form 990-N (e-Postcard) which is a confirmation of 8 things:

  • Employer identification number (EIN), also known as a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)
  • Tax year (calendar or fiscal filer)
  • Legal name and mailing address
  • Any other names the organization uses
  • Name and address of a principal officer
  • Website address if the organization has one
  • Confirmation that the organization’s annual gross receipts are $50,000 or less
  • If applicable, a statement that the organization has terminated or is terminating (going out of business)
